Nike shoemakers strike
According to reports, more than 10,000 workers have decided to take strike action over pay levels at a unit that makes shoes for Nike. The Tae Kwang Vina plant, in southern Dong Nai province, is one of the ten Vietnamese facilities that make the sportswear giant’s footwear. More than 14,000 workers, mostly women, are based at the site.
The average monthly salary is one million Vietnamese dong ($62), around 20% higher than the country’s minimum wage. Workers claim high inflation means that pay does not stretch far enough and are also looking for benefits such as bonuses and cost-of-living allowances.
Reports indicate that around 7.5 million pairs of Nike shoes are made at the plant each year, accounting for around 10% of the total number produced for the company in Vietnam.
