Indian textile exports drop in Q1

04/12/2007

India’s statistics office has revealed that the country’s textiles and clothing exports for the 2006-07 period totalled $18.7 billion compared with $ 17.5 billion in 2005-06, a growth of 6.9%. However, the sector’s exports for the first quarter of this financial year have fallen 14% in terms of value, year-on-year. The decline has mainly been attributed to the appreciation of Indian rupee against the dollar.

In response it has introduced a series of measures including a 3% increase in Duty Entitlement Passbook Scheme rates for nine sectors including textiles, handlooms and handicrafts; service tax rebates; technology upgrade schemes; and concessions to rates connected with imports of certain textiles and garment machinery.
