Nike backs Bali Communiqué on climate change

06/12/2007

Nike president and CEO, Mark Parker, has joined 150 global business leaders in their bid to tackle climate change. The large group teamed up to publish the Bali communiqué, which calls on world leaders to create a comprehensive, legally binding United Nations framework to tackle climate change.

The initiative brings together some of the largest companies and brands from around the world, including the US, Europe, Australia and China.

It is led by The Prince of Wales’s UK and EU Corporate Leaders Groups on Climate Change, which are developed and run by the University of Cambridge Programme for Industry.

The Communiqué calls for emission reduction targets to be guided primarily by science with those that have already industrialised to make the greatest effort. It urges world leaders to agree a work plan of negotiations to ensure an agreement can come into force post 2012 (when the existing Kyoto Protocol expires).

The UN Climate Change Conference is currently underway in Bali, Indonesia and will run from December 3-14.
