Regulation approaches for nanotextiles providers

Companies bringing nanotechnology innovation into the textile space face three immediate challenges, according to Dr Christoph Meili, chief executive of the Innovation Society, a Swiss-based research body.
The key issues for this industry are safety, risk and regulation, he told a specialist conference on nanotextiles in Prague yesterday.
“Companies that are incorporating nanotechnology into their products should label them accordingly,” he said, “and they have to integrate risk into their strategies. They have to think carefully about whether the technology they are using is potentially hazardous or not, and it depends on the application. If there is a risk of migration of nanoparticles, for example of silver ions, you have to take that into account.”
