Reports indicate that Newcastle United owner and entrepreneur Mike Ashley is to become chairman of Sports Direct. Former chairman David Richardson left the sporting goods retailer in May and a replacement has not been appointed as yet.

Mr Ashley owns a majority stake in the company and has been executive deputy chairman since the company floated in February.

There is speculation that the retail chain will post significant losses when it reveals its first half financial results on December 19.
