Job losses at Barbour as factory closes

16/01/2008

According to reports, workers at a soon to be closed Barbour factory have voted to accept redundancy packages offered by the company. Tyneside-based J Barbour sons is to close its Galashiels unit on January 31, affecting 46 employees. There has been no official explanation for the closure and reports indicate that no appeal for government help was logged.

The news has been described as “shocking” and has been attributed to a general economic slowdown. The firm first proposed voluntary redundancies in October 2007.

The company specialises in making clothing for the countryside lifestyle, including wax jackets, knitwear and accessories.
