The winners of the fourth annual Volvo SportsDesign Awards received their awards at a ceremony in Munich, Germany. The theme for the 2008 award is ‘EcoDesign - form follows sustainability’.

More than 300 companies and designers submitted entries related to eco design and the winners came from France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Sweden and the US.
Jury members narrowed these submissions down to 35 nominees in seven categories. The main judging criteria consisted of functionality, form, innovative step, ergonomics, shape and production, material, manufacturing, distribution, product life cycle, recyclability and usability.
The awards were divided into the categories as follows:

Outdoor Equipment: Nextec srl for its OutDry membrane system for water-proofing footwear;

  • Ski Equipment: Grown Skis for its wooden skis;
  • Board Equipment: Amer-Salomon with Salomon Snowboards;
  • Apparel: Klättermusen for its Einride Jacket;

A special EcoBrand of the Year award was given to Patagonia. Over the past 12 months, the company has contributed $2.5 million to support environmental activist groups around the world. The company’s mid-range goal is to make all products recyclable. When it comes to design, Patagonia's philosophy is based on a quote by French pilot and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: "Perfection is not reached when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing more to take away."
