Puma v1.08 ball makes on-pitch debut in Vienna
Germany-based sportswear giant Puma’s newest match ball, the v1.08, will earn its first appearance during tonight’s friendly between Germany and Austria in Vienna.
The 24-panel design reduces the internal radii variance for greater roundness, while its dimple outer casing reduces drag for a more aerodynamic performance. The ball also features Perimeter Balance Technology to balance out the weight of the air valve and Pal–Puma Air Lock to protect against air leakage.
However, the company claims the ball’s most exiting feature is a new d3o cushioning layer, developed with the help of UK-based material developers. The layer is sandwiched between the outer casing and the inner woven textile backing.
At low impact speeds, for example when the player is dribbling the ball, the cushioning layer retains its soft feel, but when impacted at speed, such as a powerful free kick, the d3o molecules lock together instantaneously to increase the ball’s acceleration off the foot.
Comparative tests undertaken by Sheffield Hallam University, UK, found that the new ball leaves the foot six percent quicker at high impact speeds than previous Puma balls and quicker than any other brands’ match balls.
In addition to tonight’s match, the ball will be used by Puma national teams including Italy and Euro 2008 hosts Austria and Switzerland. Clubs using the FIFA-approved ball include VfB Stuttgart and Lazio.
