International students design high-tech clothing

13/02/2008

Students from Sweden, Finland, Spain, England and Wales have taken part in a research project hosted by the University of Wales, Newport, to create ‘intelligent’ clothing incorporating various types of computerised technology.

The students spent three weeks on the collaborative EU intensive programme creating blueprints for a futuristic clothing collection including sportswear, corporate wear and activewear aimed at older generation.

The resulting designs were user-friendly, weather-proof garments combining communication devices, voice recognition sensors, survival equipment, electronic compasses and satellite navigation technology with ultra-light fabrics made from recycled bamboo and coconuts.
