South African textile industry disappointed
Representatives of South Africa's clothing and textile sector are lamenting the government's decision to turn down an economic partnership agreement with the EU.
The deal would have enabled manufacturers to take advantage of more flexible rules governing the export of clothing and textile items to EU countries. According to chairman of the Export Council for the clothing industry, Jack Kipling, producers were "very disappointed" with the decision.
Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland signed the agreement in November, while South Africa and Namibia both decided to withdraw consent.
