Canadian clothing sales buck the retail trend
According to the Canadian statistics office, retail sales rose 0.6% in December to approximately $35.1 billion, the third increase in four months. Meanwhile, 2007 retail sales grew 5.8% compared with 2006 to an estimated $412.2 billion, making 2007 the second highest year for retail sales in the country since 2002.
Despite this, clothing and accessory stores reported a 2.7% decrease in retail sales for December. Clothing stores alone recorded a decline of 3.2% month-on-month, despite falling prices.
