Apparel sector employment falls
Figures from the Brazilian commerce and industry department show that employment in the apparel, footwear and leather goods sectors fell in 2007 despite having risen 2.2% across all industries.
São Paulo (3.5%), Paraná (3.1%) and Minas Gerais (1.5%) registered the highest growth in employment. By sector, the biggest job generators were food and drink (4%), transport (7.7%), metal products (7.3%) and machinery and equipment (7%).
However, employment showed the largest declines in the footwear and leather goods (-7.3%), apparel (-3.7%) and wood processing (-5.7%) sectors.
