Mexx to close UK stores
Netherlands-based fashion chain Mexx has decided to close 61 UK stores as sales continue to fall and trading conditions worsen. Flagship stores in London and Edinburgh will be closed in addition to divisions within House of Fraser and John Lewis department stores. Approximately 300 jobs will be lost as a result of the move.
Despite the store closures, the company’s 15 UK factory sites will continue to operate. It will also maintain its wholesale business in the UK and in Ireland.
Mexx, which was acquired by designer Liz Claiborne in 2001, has been struggling because of increased competition from other European brands. The company, which operates in 65 countries and has more than 6,000 employees in total, will now focus on its more profitable outlets. It has stores in the US, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific and sells fashion items for men, women and children.
