Arkema and Scarpa design eco ski boot

Arkema and Scarpa have been developing an ecological ski boot, the Scarpa Hurricane. Pebax Rnew, a high-tech thermoplastic elastomer derived from more than 80% renewable raw materials will be used for the shell, strap band and tongue of the boot.

Italian sports equipment manufacturer Scarpa, which specialises in skiing, mountaineering and rock-climbing boots, designed the Hurricane to offer excellent performance levels as well as considering the environment. Pebax Rnew offers the same properties as traditional Pebax; however, it is mainly derived from vegetable oil.

Pebax is said to be 20% lighter than traditional elastomers used in ski boots, such as thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs). It can be used for all types of snow sports including freestyle skiing, long-distance skiing, telemark skiing, and snowboarding.

France-based chemicals company Arkema also makes Pebax for snowboard binding straps, walking boots, sunglasses and ski masks. Its Rilsan range of polyamides are made from 100% renewable raw materials for the surface of skis and for ski straps, while its Rilsan Clear polyamide is used for sunglasses and ski masks.
