Decline in Chinese textile exports

13/03/2008

According to official statistics, exports of Chinese textiles and garments fell 32.9% n February compared with January figures. Compared with February 2006, exports were down 8.5% to $10.3 billion.

The drop, which has largely been attributed to weaker demand from the US and Europe, bad weather and currency effects, has had a significant impact on the textile sector.

Combined exports for January and February rose just 9.6% year-on-year to 25.6 billion compared with a 20% increase in the two-month period in 2007. Full year fabric and apparel exports for 2007 showed annual growth of 18.9%, with exports totalling $171.2 billion.
