Levi’s factory closure affects 257 jobs
Jeans specialist Levi Strauss & Co. is to close its apparel factory in Manila, Philippines, at the end of July. The move will leave 257 workers without jobs. The factory has been producing the company’s jeans for the domestic and Asian market since 1972.
According to the company, it now plans to focus on its core competency, which is marketing its branded products in Asia.
“This has been a very difficult decision for us. We have examined comprehensively all other options, including cost containment and improving the efficiency and productivity of this plant as first options. Unfortunately, such measures cannot overcome the significantly lower costs of outsourcing,” comments manager for Levi Strauss Philippines, Ramon Martelino.
The company will continue to distribute its goods across the country. “Levi Strauss & Co. regards the Philippines as a key market here in Asia-Pacific,” says Mr Martelino.
