AATCC competition finalists named
Names of the finalists in the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists' (AATCC's) fourth annual design competition have been unveiled. The theme for the contest was Earth Day, Every Day.
There were 140 entries from 25 different institutions, and the finalists are as follows:
In the interior/outdoor design, fabric design category: Alternative Design for Umbrella Fabrics (Megumi Caitlin Doi, Rhode Island School of Design); Everything Goes Around Comes Around (Hyun Koh, Rhode Island School of Design); Simplicity (Laura Walgenbach and Laralyn Lveders, University of Wisconsin-Madison); Spontaneity within Boundaries (Saera Lee, Rhode Island School of Design); and Wool You Be Mine? (Monica Ogrodowski, Rhode Island School of Design).
There was just one interior/outdoor design, product design finalist: Sunshine Moon Beam (Brittany Campbell, The Cleveland Institute of Art).
Finalists in the apparel design, fabric design category are: Green with the Wind (Jessica Murphy, Syracuse University); Intertwined (Miriam Carlson, Dominican University); Iris (Jessica Lee, Virginia Commonwealth University); Night Lights (Caitlin Bridgers, Drexel University); and Old Motifs, New Fabric: Low Impact Fiber Reactive Dye Printed on Bamboo Fabric (Rita Fawcett, Rhode Island School of Design).
In the apparel design, product design, finalists are: Bamboosie (Carolyn Wilkins, Esther Chang, Johanna Medina, and Kathryn McKoy, North Carolina State University); Natural Beauty (Casey Bianco, Virginia Commonwealth University); Recycled with Love (Lauren Waterman, Illinois State University); Save the African Safari (Allie Thielens, Cornell University); and Seamless Flying Seeds (Wang Xue Qin, Institute of Textiles & Clothing-Hong Kong Polytechnic University).
These finalists will now submit story boards and final products, which will be judged on May 5. Winning entries will receive cash awards of $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place in each sub-category, plus complimentary student registrations for the 2009 AATCC International Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on March 10-12, 2009.
