New weft knit textile plant opens
A new weft knit fabric production plant has opened on the west coast of Sri Lanka, at the Seethawaka International Industrial Park near Colombo. The unit is operated by Textured Jersey Lanka, a joint venture from apparel solutions provider Brandix Lanka and Hong Kong-based knitwear specialist Pacific Textiles.
The site will provide employment for approximately 1,200 workers and will house one of the most up-to-date dye houses in the world.
It is hoped that the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) will also give the country's textile sector a boost. While the textile industry currently contributes around 5% of the country's annual output, it is set to grow 4% as a result of the agreement.
