AWI launches woolmark prize

02/04/2008

Chief executive at Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), Craig Welsh, has introduced ‘The Australian Merino Woolmark Prize’, which is designed to award fashion creativity. “Identifying and investing in the next generation is critical to the success of any industry,” Mr Welsh explains.

“It is also a way to assist future designers and consumers to understand the great benefits of Australian Merino wool being natural, biodegradable and sustainable, which makes it one of the most exciting natural fibres available today.”

The prize will be open to young designers who have recently graduated and are already professionally active. For the inaugural Woolmark Prize 2008, designers from countries including China, Japan, Norway, the UK, Belgium, Germany and France have been selected to participate. Each designer has created a capsule collection, focusing on the sensual, sculptural aspects of knitted yarn.

A panel will assess the entries and adjudicate the prize, which will be presented at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, on July 3. The winner

will receive support from AWI and Woolmark through industry support and mentoring.
