Body-mapping garments to help Australian sportspeople

According to reports, a number of Australian netball and basketball players are using CSIRO-developed interactive textiles to help boost on-court performance.

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is working closely with CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology scientist, Dr Richard Helmer, to develop new wearable body-mapping garments, designed to help athletes improve their skills. For example, the Australian netball team is using an interactive sleeve on the player’s goal shooting hand. The system plays a series of beats in-sync with the player’s arm and wrist movements as they take a shot. The beats are triggered as the limbs move and if the motion is ‘correct' the beats follow a recognisable pattern.
