NITRA develops milkweed cots-wool alternative

07/04/2008
The Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) has been looking for an alternative to cots-wool blends for the last three years and has found natural fibre milkweed to fit the bill. Milkweed can also be used to replace wool in cots-wool blends.

Milkweed fibre (Asclepiad syriaca) is obtained from the seedpod of milkweed, which is also known as mudar. The plant family is found in the tropical regions and in the drier parts of Central and South America. It grows abundantly in India, on the wastelands in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Milkweed is a single cell natural fibre similar to cotton but does not have the same convolutions as cotton fibre. It contains various milk saps in its leaves, stem and pods. Milkweed has low cellulosic content and a smooth surface and, as the fibre is hollow and lightweight, it offers good insulation and buoyancy.

NITRA is considering developing the fibre for commercial use and is looking for some technical collaboration on the project.
