Helicopter gear blows hot and cold

09/04/2008

Norwegian research group SINTEF and outdoor brand Helly Hansen have worked together to produce a new heat management helicopter suit.

According to SINTEF, the suit keeps the body cool in hot helicopter cabins, but turns into a heat-retaining device should the wearer end up in the sea as the result of a helicopter accident.

A number of offshore Norwegian workers are using the suits, which was awarded the 2008 Good Design Mark by the Norwegian Design Council. The suits were developed in response to demands from the Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF) and are bright orange to help attract attention if the wearer is stranded at sea.
