Higher Dyneema production planned

Netherlands-based life and materials sciences company Royal DSM N.V. is to announce plans for a substantial capital expenditure programme, expected to involve up to $450 million. The project is expected to involve several phases of implementation over the next two to three years, with the first additional line likely to be operational in 2009. The majority of investments are likely to be in the US.

This will increase production capacity in its Dyneema business, enabling it to capitalise on expected continuous growth in demand in the US. Dyneema is a super strong polyethylene fibre, which the company claims is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibres. Its Dyneema sales have grown by more than 15% per year in recent years.

DSM recently opened a new Dyneema fibre production line in Greenville, North Carolina.
