Irish workwear group expands

Mayo-based workwear manufacturer Portwest Clothing is looking to expand its South Yorkshire site, which has enabled its annual turnover to soar to more than €30 million. The growth, at Thurnscoe, near Rotherham, will be part of Portwest’s ambitious plan to expand by 20% in the next financial year.

Last year, the company invested €7 million in a 200,000 sq. ft. purpose-built office and warehouse complex in the village. It has now acquired a further 4.5 acres of land alongside the warehouse, allowing it to double the size of its operation.

The Thurnscoe site has quickly become central to Portwest’s UK and European operations, and spearheaded its rapid expansion from a team of five or six people in the early 1980s to a current workforce of almost 100. Although the company still has its head office in Westport, County Mayo, most of its operations have been based in Goldthorpe, also in South Yorkshire, since the mid 1990s.

Products held at the Thurnscoe premises include specialist workwear, rainwear, high visibility garments, chefswear and footwear.
