According to the US department of agriculture, American net textile and apparel trade expanded slightly in 2007. Total fibre product imports were 19.7 billion raw-fiber-equivalent pounds, similar to the 2006 record.

However, fibre product exports declined for the second consecutive year to 4.1 billion pounds, the lowest since 1996. As a result, net fiber product imports reached a record of 15.6 billion pounds in 2007, 4% above 2006 figures.

Cotton products were the largest contributor to net textile trade in 2007, accounting for almost 58% of the total. Manmade fibers contributed nearly 36%.

In 2007, US cotton textile and apparel imports were essentially unchanged at 11 billion pounds, while textile exports declined to two billion pounds, pushing net cotton product imports higher. Net textile imports were also higher for manmade fibres while those for the other fibre products were effectively unchanged.
