Drop in sportswear sales at Columbia

Active outdoor apparel and footwear group Columbia Sportswear Company has posted net sales of $297.4 million for the quarter ended March 31, a 3% increase compared with $289.6 million for the same period of 2007. First quarter net income totalled $19.9 million compared with $26.1 million.

Sales grew 20% in the Latin America and Asia Pacific region (LAAP) to $49 million and 4% in Canada to $26.9 million. However, the Europe, Middle-East and Africa region (EMEA) registered a 3% decline and US net sales were flat with the prior year quarter.

Outerwear net sales rose 16% to $69.6 million, while and accessories and equipment net sales increased 12% to $15.4 million. However, these increases were partially offset by a 1% decrease in sportswear sales, which totalled $161.1 million and a 3% decrease in footwear sales at $51.3 million.

Columbia brand sales increased 2% to $267.2 million, Mountain Hardwear brand sales increased 23% to $21.8 million and Sorel brand sales rose 6% to $3.7 million. However, there was a 20% decline in Montrail brand sales to $3.9 million, while Pacific Trail brand sales were more or less flat with first quarter 2007 sales.
