21st century textiles symposium looms

Five representatives from the contemporary textiles sector will speak at the pone-day 21st Century Textiles symposium, which will be held on May 10 in Stroud, UK. The event will take place during the Stroudwater International Textile Festival.

Speakers include: Marie O'Mahony, an independent consultant specialising in advanced textiles and technology. Ms O'Mahony co-wrote 'Techno Textiles 2: Revolutionary Fabrics for Fashion & Design' Presentation: Collaboration – the Future of Textiles'; Sarah Braddock Clarke, who co-wrote the presentation with Ms O'Mahony and is also a writer, curator and lecturer. She will focus on new materials and their applications to fashion and art under the heading 'The New Flexibles'; Rebecca Earley, designer and reader of Textiles Environment Design at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Ms Earley's presentation will be 'Textiles and the Environment, and the role and responsibility of the textile designer in the future'; Sally Freshwater, principal lecturer at School of Art and Design, University of Hertfordshire and programme leader on MA Art Practices. Her presentation is 'Development of site specific work – working with architecture'; and Jennifer Shellard of London College of Fashion. Ms Shellard is programme leader surface textiles and her presentation will be on 'Light Cloth', exploring interactions of colour between hand woven textiles and projected, manipulated light.
