The British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) has teamed up with the De Montfort University (DMU), based in Leicester, to sponsor a forthcoming competition designed to encourage textile and fashion students to be creative with British Wool.

Richard Poole, European business manager at the BWMB, said: “We have regular contact with the international trade and the enquiries this year have been far more diverse - more and more enquiries are focusing on two key words; Natural and British.

“The desire for British Wool within major name retail marketing is very real and we have to ensure that research and development with suitable breeds can evolve to meet the trend.

"So we are working with yarn spinners on blends that will help to make British Wool breeds a fibre for cloth and fashion.”

De Montfort University has a history of involvement with the textile trade which spans back to 1870. Programme leader for textile design at DMU, Lyndsey Chambers, said: "The textile design students and the staff here are looking forward to working with the BWMB to explore the potential of British Wool as an innovative surface suitable for fashion.

"The students will be working with wool and combinations of other materials with wool to explore the diversity and broaden the perceptions of how wool can be used.”
