According to Bilal Mulla, central chairman of the Pakistan readymade garment manufacturers and exporters association, the country’s garment exports continue to thrive.

Mr Mulla said that official figures for the readymade garments sector show that exports for 2005 totalled $2.7 billion, while exports for the year ended June 2006 were $3.1 billion and 2007 exports totalled $3.3 billion, despite some significant hurdles.

He said that $7 billion has been invested in the country’s garment sector in recent years and the sector is a significant employment generator. Mr Mulla added that while exporting one bale of cotton earns $238, a garment made from one bale of cotton can make $1,600.
