New Japanese swimsuits to compete with Speedo LZR Racer

According to reports, three Japanese sportswear manufacturers have launched new technical swimwear items in competition with the much-publicised Speedo LZR Racer, which will be worn by some swimmers at the Beijing Olympics in August. However, Japanese Olympic swimmers must wear suits made by Japanese companies.

Mizuno, Asics and Descente presented their suits to the Japan Swimming Federation on May 30 and is hoped they will be tested out at the Japan Open in Tokyo from June 6-8. It remains to be seen how swimmers wearing the suits will compare with those wearing the Speedo gear. Since February 12, when the LZR Racer launched, 37 world records have been achieved by swimmers wearing it.

Asics presented two new suit types which are designed to make pressure on the legs lighter, while Descente unveiled three suit models. Both manufacturers have used Yamamoto's synthetic rubber fabric, Biorubber Swim-SCS, which is often used for wetsuits, to form part of their suits. Mizuno, whose suit is worn by current breaststroke champion Kosuke Kitajima, introduced a new suit which aims to reduce friction in the water.
