Textile and garment exports fall

According to Macau’s statistics and census service has reported that total exports for May totalled MOP1.66 billion ($206.6 million), down by 7.1% year-on-year. The value of domestic exports decreased by 10% to MOP975 million, while re-exports fell 2.5% to MOP687 million. The value of total imports totalled MOP3.59 billion, down 2.7% year-on-year. A trade deficit of MOP1.92 billion was recorded for May.

From January to May, total exports fell 8.6% year-on-year to MOP7.02 billion. The value of textile and garment exports, accounting for 59.1% of total exports during the first five months fell 13.2% compared with the same period in 2007. Exports of machines and apparatus, parts and accessories and footwear dropped 48.4% and 51%.

In the first five months, the value of exports to the USA, Mainland China and the EU decreased by 4.0%, 39.9% and 37.8% respectively year-on-year, while exports to Hong Kong rose 26.1%.
