Brazilian textile firm Santana Textiles is to build a new $180 million factory in Edinburg, Texas, according to Rick Perry at the University of Texas-Pan American.

A spokesperson for the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation (EDC), Ramiro Garza, said the new unit would create approximately 800 jobs in the region, and that the facility will produce denim fabric from cotton.

Set to open in January 2010, it will be built on land given the firm by the EDC and the city will also pay for the utility improvments at the site.

The plan is part of the Texas Enterprise Fund, a state programme designed to help provide economic incentives to job creating companies. The state has committed $1.6 million to the project from the fund, and this is the first occasion that the money has been used to bring a new company to the Rio Grande Valley.

State Rep. Aaron Peña, D-Edinburg, said he welcomes the Brazilian company to the city.
