Help for textile sector proposed
South Africa's trade and industry department has completed a plan to give its textile and apparel sector a lift.
According to trade and industry minister, Mandisi Mpahlwa, revealed that it was hoping to effect a long-term growth strategy with the support of industry stakeholders.
Incentives will be extended to include a productivity-linked programme, which will replace the export-based Duty Credit Certificate Scheme, in a bid to move away from a volumes-based export incentive. The department is also planning to offer incentives for small and medium sized enterprises as well as investing in research and development funding for the industry.
Duties on fabric not produced in the South African Customs Union will be scrapped and duties on small quantities of textile items will be carefully considered.
