Shetland textile celebrates 20th anniversary
Shetland textile group will celebrate its 20th anniversary on July 12, at an open day in the Shetland Isles' new museum. The Shetland Guild of Spinners, Weavers, Knitters and Dyers was formed in 1988 with just 12 members. The number has now risen to nearly 45, including associates from Australia, America, Canada and Japan, among others.
At the open day, visitors will get a chance to see how knitting and spinning is carried out through a number of free demonstrations. Skills sessions presented by members will also take place later in the month.
The new museum will showcase a small selection of the guild’s textile collection, which will give visitors a brief history of the textile industry to date. The display will continue for the whole year until the group acquires its own premises.
