Brazil is ‘guest country’ at SIMM
Brazil was picked as ‘guest country’ at this year’s SIMM (the Madrid International Fashion Week), which took place on July 17-20. The colours of the Brazilian flag, green and yellow, played an important role at the event.
Representatives of ABIT (the Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) were greeted by Princess Letizia, who inaugurated the fair, and daily fashion shows featured new collections for spring-summer 2009 from various Brazilian brands.
Rafael Cervone Netto, manager of the Texbrasil Programme, said: “Europe, and most especially Spain, is one of the most important markets for the Brazilian textile and apparel industry. Brazil has a lot to offer European consumers.”
Brazil is the sixth largest textile producer in the world with a turnover of almost $34.6 billion and exports of approximately $2.4 billion. With almost 30,000 companies in the sector, the Brazilian industry provides work for a total of 1.65 million employees, the country’s second largest sector for employment. The textile industry in Brazil accounts for 17.5% of GDP in manufacturing industry and almost 3.5% of Brazil's overall GDP figure.
Brazilian brands represented at the event included: Algodão Colorido Natural, Confraria, Bel Sol, Espaço Bem Brasil, Bia Brazil, BR Tricot, Brazilian Fit, Cactus Brasil, Iber Boomerang, La Dumaux, Mabel Magalhães, Márcia Ganem, Mina D’água, Natural Fashion, No Limits, SummerShop, Sun Gold, Arte Brasil Bijouterias y Accesorios, Upper and AfroBahia.
