New nylon means less gas

Yarn producer Unifi has extended its Repreve idea—a polyester made from 100% recycled materials—to nylon.

The compnay prepared the new Repreve nylon for the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 08 Show in Salt Lake City. The International Textile Group’s Burlington Worldwide division has used the yarn in its new Generations collection of technical sportswear. And United Knitting has also used it in a series of new knit fabrics for activewear that it describes as “eco-friendly”.

Unifi said on launching Repreve nylon that the new product could help companies bring sustainable textile solutions to market. The company suggested that using recycled material to produce the yarn would offset the need to produce virgin nylon, meaning the manufacturing process would consumer fewer petroleum-based resources. Unifi’s estimate is that its current production of Repreve saves an estimated 26.5 million litres of gasoline a year.
