New brand focuses on renewables

Polyester manufacturer Advansa has launched a new brand of fibres and yarns made from DuPont’s Bio-PDO polymer. It has chosen the brand name Biophyl for the fabrics it will make from the corn sucrose-based product.

Advansa said on launching the new brand that yarns made from the polymer consumed between 30% and 40% less energy than nylon made from fossil fuels, and emitted between 50% and 60% less greenhouse gas.

At the same time, it said Biophyl fabrics would help garment manufacturers produce apparel with a soft hand, easy care and good stretch and recovery qualities. It explained that a pronounced kink in the polymer’s molecular structure was the key to its ability to offer these benefits.

Commenting on the powerful combination of performance and environmental benefits that Biophyl fabrics could offer, Advansa’s market manager, Luciano Colasanto, said: “By replacing traditional petrochemicals with renewable resources and biological processes, we are one step closer to building a renewable economy.”
