A general strike by workers in South Africa on August 6 won strong support from those in the textile and apparel sector, with around 90% taking part.

The South African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union was the first to report the number of its members who had decided to take part in the one-day industrial action—a protest against rising living costs—and said that 118,000 out of its 131,000 members joined in.

Workers’ marches took place in Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Ladysmith, Klerksdorp, Polokwane and Witbank.
