Knitwear workers get 20% pay-rise

11/08/2008

Workers in Bangladesh’s knit-fabric manufacturing industries will get a pay rise of about 20% to offset the rising cost of living there.

Mohammad Fazlul Haque, president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), confirmed that his organisation had agreed the measure on August 11.

Knitwear is the country’s largest export earner and employs 800,000 workers in more than 1,500 factories, he explained.

Earnings from knitwear garments in the July-June period of the 2007–08 fiscal year grew 21.5% to $5.5 billion.

“We want a peaceful atmosphere in factories so that our production is not hampered and can sustain growth,” Mr Fazlul told  a news conference.
