Organic opportunity

There is a strong growing global demand for organic wool and consumers are willing to pay a premium for it, according to Pedro Otegui, one of the Uruguay’s leading wool and textile exporters.
At a conference in August Mr Otegui said this has become “a great challenge for Uruguay”, but that it also represented an opportunity that the textile industry there should take advantage of.
“Consumers are increasingly demanding quality and assurances that what they are buying will not cause harm to the environment,” he said. “As a company we are in the process of obtaining an organic industrial licence. There’s a long protocol to comply with, but the necessary certification will give us access to a market willing to pay extra.”
