Impressive export increase

22/08/2008

Ethiopian exports for the first half of 2008 have, under the US African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), more than doubled to reach $9.7 million, a rise of 89% across all sectors.

However, exports from the textile and garments sectors enjoyed growth of more than 160%. In part this was because of the advantages offered under AGOA, such as zero tariff preference, but it also bears out what many observers of the Ethiopian economy have been saying for some time: that the industry in the African country has been under-performing.
