Chunya farmers to start planting cotton again

26/08/2008
Farmers living in the Chunya District of Mbeya and other southern regions of Tanzania have heard that the government will allow them to grow cotton this season, after being assured that the red bollwarm, a crop pest, has been completely eradicated from these areas.

Research about the pest, which began in 2005-06, is to come to an end this year. IT was conducted in various regions in order to examine how much damage it had done to crops. The initial results show that red bollwarm is still present in areas such as Mbala, Ifumbo, Magamba, Kanga, Galula and Chan'gombe (excluding Mapogoro).

The red bollwarm had forced cotton farmers to divert their crop and grow sunflowers which could be sold to processors who extracted oil from them. However, the growers were not satisfied with this as this industry did not offer them financial security.
