Major Mozambican textile units to reopen
Reports indicate that two major Mozambican textile factories that closed during the 1990s because of bankruptcy are to reopen.
National director for industry and trade, Sergio Macamo, said that Texlom, previously owned by Portuguese company Sogetex has been taken over by the Aga Khan Foundation. Based in Matola on the outskirts of Maputo, the new owners hope to start producing clothing at the site in the near future. Eventually it hopes to be able to offer a more complete service, from processing the cotton fibres all the way through to garment production.
The second plant Texmoque has been acquired by Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd. Based in Nampula, the site is being kitted out with new equipment before it is reopened. It is hoped that it will be up and running before the end of the year.
