Floods hit cotton crop

Around 130 hectares of cotton fields are under water in the Mexican state of Coahuila and the local authorities fear the crop will be destroyed.

Floods hit the north-eastern state when the River Nazas overflowed.

The state’s minister for rural development, Héctor Fernández Aguirre, visited the affected region on October 1 and said his government would wait to see the full extent of the damage before deciding what help to offer farmers. He said only 50% of farms in the area had insurance, but even they were not covered as the insurance protected them against crop damage from hail.

This part of Mexico has around 2,000 hectares of agricultural land devoted to producing cotton, but the minister said less than 135 hectares had been affected.
