Trade commissioner steps down
03/10/2008
The European Union's trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson has resigned from his position. He will return to London from Brussels to take up a position in the UK government.
All 27 members of the European Union nominate one commissioner each to run one of its departments; the new trade commissioner will, therefore, also come from the UK. In this case, Baroness Catherine Ashton will replace Mr Mandelson. She has, until now, been the government's most senior representative in the House of Lords, the second tier of the UK parliament.
