Indonesia revises export target and slips in textile rankings
07/10/2008
The textile industry in Indonesia has revised its target for export growth for 2008 from a 10% increase on last year’s to 8%. In value terms, it now estimates that textile and garment exports will bring in $10.86 billion as opposed to its earlier estimate of $11.06 billion.
The executive secretary of the Indonesian Textile Association, Ernovian Ismy, has said the could have met the original target with support from the government.
According to Ms Ernovian, inadequate infrastructure at ports, high credit interest rates, high levels of imported products, and shortages in the energy supply have impeded the growth of the textile industry in Indonesia.
As a result, she also said that Indonesia had slipped from fifth position in the list of textile exporting countries to number 11.
Around 36% of the country’s textile production is exported to the US, 16% to Europe, and 5% to Japan.
