India misses textile export target
20/10/2008
India’s total textile exports for the fiscal year ending March 2008 stood at $22 billion, below the official target of $25.06 billion, a government website confirmed on October 20.
“The shortfall in export can be partially attributed to the appreciation of the Indian rupee during 2007–08 by over 13%, leading to loss of price competitiveness in the international market,” the statement said.
A general slow-down in the demand for textiles and clothing products in some of the major overseas markets also hurt exports, it added.
The share of textiles in the total exports of the country declined to 13.5% in 2007–08 from 15.16% in the previous year.
