Organic cotton production up by 152%

The sixth global conference of the
Organic Exchange (OE)—an organisation that aims to facilitate expansion of organic cotton fibre supply worldwide—took place in Porto, Portugal, in mid-October.

The event attracted more than 180 attendees from 27 countries, including farmers and major retailers.

In the course of the conference, OE released its Organic Cotton Farm and Fibre Report 2008 showing the amount of organic cotton that farmers grew worldwide in 2007/08 increased by 152% to 145,872 tonnes, grown in 22 countries. India, Syria, Turkey, China, Tanzania, the US, Uganda, Peru, Egypt, and Burkina Faso were the top ten organic cotton-producing countries in order of rank, with India taking over Turkey’s long-time standing as the number one producer. The increase was driven in large part by the heightened global demand for organic cotton on the part of small- to large-sized retailers.
