China will work to keep textile exports growing

27/10/2008

China will take comprehensive measures next year to ensure stable textile export growth, the ministry of commerce
has said. A senior official in the ministry’s foreign trade department said the government would take steps to provide exporters in the textile space with a “sound external trade environment”.

Textile and garment exports reached $136.94 billion in the first nine months of 2008, an increase of 8.1% on the previous year. However, this is a substantially slower rate of growth than the industry has achieved in China in recent years. Exports to the US have experienced a particularly sharp dip in growth-rate, approximately 28%.

The official said the ministry would “strengthen cooperation and dialogue with textile trade partner countries” and help Chinese textile producers to “upgrade their industrial structure”.

He urged textile companies to increase the quality of their products so that they can enhance their standing on the global market.
