China: adidas claims market leadership

Sports brand adidas is on track to record sales of EUR 1 billion in China by 2010. 

Wolfgang Bentheimer, managing director of Adidas Greater China, told a fashion news website that the brand's huge investment in sponsorship and advertising around the Beijing Olympics had allowed it to overtake Nike in the Chinese market and claim market leadership there.

"We have been working for the last 12–18 months on this. We closed the gap, we have finally got it," Mr Bentheimer said, in an interview with just-style.com.

He claimed adidas now held 22–23% of the premium sportswear category, with Nike following 1-2% behind.
